Fly Fishing Charters in Cuba: Frequently Asked Questions

We are a family-owned business and love introducing new-comers to the sport of fly fishing and to the salt flats of Cuba’s rugged southern coast. Our Captain holds a USCG Captain's License and has over 1200 documented days at sea, 30 years of near coastal fishing and 17 years of fly-fishing experience.

Our expert captain and guide provides tailored on-water assistance, ensuring a seamless experience through personalized gear setup, technique coaching, and expert fish handling.

Our crew strictly adheres to NSGBINST 1710.10D. To preserve local fisheries, the charter will operate primarily as a catch-and-release service. Harvesting will only be permitted if the target species falls within the authorized season and slot size dictated by current local instruction. We generally target Tarpon, Bonefish, Snook and Permit depending on the wind, tides and conditions. Tarpon are strictly catch and release only.

We use top of the line gear from brands such as Hardy, Temple Fork Outfitters, Redington, Orvis, Scientific Angler, Rio, Pflueger and more. Our reel collection includes the Hardy Fortuna Regent 10000, the Hardy Ultralite SDSL 8000, Redington Grande Special Edition and Pflueger Trion; all packed with enough backing to allow even the fiercest predator an ample run without risk of break-off. We have a diverse selection of flies, some of which have been designed and hand-tied right here in Guantanamo Bay including “The Cuban Cockroach” and the “Cu-Bone-O.” You are also welcome to bring your own fly gear but please be mindful of the limited space for storage. We carry enough leader material and tippet for any repairs while on the water.

Perdìda Cay is a 1969 Boston Whaler that in the Spring of 2026 completed a 3-year complete overhaul and refit. This vessel is one of the original designs by Boston Whaler and is often referred to as the “Unsinkable Legend.” This boat offers ample forward and rear casting decks and often takes us into waters less than 2 ft deep. She is equipped with state-of-the-art GPS/Chartplotter, a VHF radio with a redundant GPS receiver, and all USCG/local safety equipment required by NSGB instruction. She is certified for Guantanamo Bay, the Sand Box and the Tackle Box. 

· Sunglasses (or protective eyewear) for use while fishing (mandatory) – polarized lenses will significantly increase your chances of seeing the fish below the surface. These can be purchased at the NEX at a very reasonable price.

· Sunscreen – being only 19 degrees north of the equator our UV index is generally very high. High UV index, scant cloud coverage and sunlight reflecting off the water is a perfect recipe for a sunburn, be sure to protect yourself!

· We recommend wearing a hat and a SPF-rated long-sleeve sun shirt. We often wear a neck gaiter as well to protect our face and neck from the sun. 

Bug repellant - In the early morning on the flats, after dawn but before true sunrise, there is typically very little breeze and the mosquitos and no-see-ums can be bothersome.

· There is no specific type of footwear required, but closed, non-slip and non-marking shoes are ideal. 

Fishing charters involve inherent risks, including but not limited to weather conditions, marine hazards, equipment use, and physical activity. Participation in any charter is undertaken at your own risk. Specific waivers or agreements may be required prior to participation. Life jackets are available on the boat at all times. 

Only individuals currently living in Guantanamo Bay,  their on-island guests or those who have been granted access to the installation may book a charter. 

Our all-inclusive charters provide professional guidance, premium tackle and gear, boat, fuel, and refreshments at rates well below the regional averages for comparable fishing charters in Cuba and throughout the Caribbean.

For comparison, typical regional pricing ranges from $400 to $875 for a four-hour excursion and $600 to $1,300 for a six-hour trip. Our rates are substantially lower than these regional averages, providing exceptional value without sacrificing equipment, service, or amenities.

Complete equipment: All fishing gear, tackle, and necessary equipment are fully provided.

We prefer to have no more than two anglers on each trip. This allows for improved safety and allows the space needed for fly casting. Each charter is priced per trip and not per person. 

Click on the "Book Now" icon at the top or bottom of this page. Each trip (except "Try-Fly") requires a $25 deposit with the remainder of your trip due at the dock prior to beginning your trip. 

We accept all major credit cards for your deposit. The remainder of your trip can be paid in cash or card via our point-of-sale system. 

After booking your charter you will receive an email allowing you to create an account and password. If you do not receive an email check your spam folder. You will be given access to the “Required Forms” tab on our website. All forms can be filled out and filed digitally from any desktop, tablet or phone in just a couple of minutes!

If you need to cancel for any reason, we require a 72-hour notice to avoid losing your deposit.

All trips are weather-dependent. We use several weather apps when making a call to postpone or not. Swell height and speed, chop, wind strength, thunderstorms and other factors are all considered. We have a maximum wind speed of 15 knots, depending on wind direction, that we operate in. Your safety is our absolute priority. Prior to the start of a trip, if the forecast proves to be wrong and conditions are deemed to be unsafe the Captain will make the call to cancel the trip and a full refund will be provided. If at any point throughout a trip conditions deteriorate, the Captain will decide if the trip is to be cut short, the boat will return to the dock, and passengers will be partially refunded based on the time spent on the water.

During fishing charters operated by The Cuban Fly, photographs and video may be taken for promotional, marketing, or documentation purposes. This may include images or footage of guests, vessel, catches, and surrounding environments. By participating in a charter, guests grant The Cuban Fly permission to use such photographs or recordings for lawful business purposes. Social media (Facebook, Instagram) is our predominant form of advertising, and any photos or videos taken by the crew during a trip may be posted on the page and may be used again at a later date on our promotional material. Please let a crew member know if you need to be kept out of any photos taken at the beginning of the trip. All images and logos posted on this site and social media are the property of The Cuban Fly, unless otherwise credited. No content may be copied, reproduced, distributed, or used without prior written permission. Unless otherwise agreed in writing, all photographs, video, and media captured by The Cuban Fly or its representatives remain the intellectual property of The Cuban Fly.

Alcohol is not permitted onboard the Perdìda Cay.  Fly-fishing requires agility, focus and hand-eye coordination, all of which are not compatible with alcohol consumption. Clients are encouraged to arrive for their trip well-hydrated and ready to pursue some of the most sought-after species in the Caribbean.
